In Vitro Study on Chitosan and Guar Galactomannan Mixtures as Bile Acid Sorbents

|
The sorption capacity of biopolymer mixtures consisting of chitosan and guar galactomannan for taurocholic acid was investigated in regard to the molecular weight of chitosan and the mixing ratio of the two biopolymers. Increasing the molecular weight and concentration of chitosan increased the sorption capacity for taurocholic acid. The bile acid sorption capacity of 1 % chitosan was compared with that of a binary mixture system comprising 0.5% chitosan and 0.5% guar galactomannan. The mixing effects of chitosan and guar galactomannan as bile acid sorbents were more notably observed in chitosan with higher molecular weight. This research clearly showed that chitosan-galactomannan mixtures possessed comparable bile acid sorption capacity to chitosan of the same concentration.
